Understanding Kratom Extracts and Concentrates

Understanding Kratom Extracts and Concentrates

Part of our 7-OH & Botanical Alternatives Guide

Kratom extracts and concentrates offer a more potent alternative to traditional kratom powder. This guide explains what they are, how they're made, and how to use them safely.

What Are Kratom Extracts?

Kratom extracts are concentrated forms of kratom where the active alkaloids have been isolated and concentrated. This results in a more potent product that requires smaller doses.

Extraction Methods

Water-Based Extraction

Kratom is simmered in water, the liquid is strained and reduced. Simple but effective.

Alcohol-Based Extraction

Ethanol is used to extract alkaloids. Often results in higher alkaloid concentration.

CO2 Extraction

Advanced method using pressurized CO2. Produces clean, consistent extracts.

Understanding Potency Ratings

Extracts are often labeled with ratios like "10x" or "50x":

  • 10x: 10 grams of leaf used to make 1 gram of extract
  • 25x: 25 grams of leaf per gram of extract
  • 50x: 50 grams of leaf per gram of extract

Important: These ratios indicate concentration, not that it's "10 times stronger." Actual potency depends on the starting material and extraction efficiency.

Types of Extract Products

Enhanced Powder

Regular kratom powder mixed with extract. Offers increased potency while maintaining powder form.

Liquid Extracts/Tinctures

Concentrated liquid form. Fast-acting and easy to dose by the dropper.

Extract Shots

Ready-to-drink liquid extracts in single-serve bottles.

Resin

Thick, tar-like concentrated extract. Very potent, used in small amounts.

Using Extracts Safely

  1. Start extremely low: Much lower than your normal powder dose
  2. Know your product: Understand the concentration
  3. Don't mix with powder initially: Learn the extract alone first
  4. Use sparingly: Tolerance builds faster with extracts
  5. Quality matters more: Poor extracts can contain impurities
