What You'll Need
- Cleaning solution (Formula 420, Grunge Off, or isopropyl alcohol)
- Coarse salt (if using isopropyl)
- Hot water
- Plugs or plastic wrap + rubber bands
- Cleaning brushes (optional but helpful)
- Pipe cleaners or cotton swabs

Step 1: Disassemble Everything
Remove all detachable parts:
- Downstem
- Bowl
- Ash catcher (if applicable)
- Any other removable accessories
Each piece needs individual attention. Cleaning them separately ensures nothing gets missed and prevents damage from pieces knocking together.
Step 2: Empty and Pre-Rinse
Pour out all water and loose debris. Run hot tap water through the piece for 1-2 minutes. This:
- Loosens fresh resin
- Warms the glass (preventing thermal shock)
- Removes loose particles
Important: Use hot tap water—not boiling. Extreme temperature changes can crack glass, especially thicker pieces.
Step 3: Add Cleaning Solution
If Using Purpose-Made Cleaner:
Pour enough cleaner to reach all interior surfaces when shaken. Most cleaners work best when they can contact all areas.
If Using Isopropyl + Salt:
- Add 2-3 tablespoons of coarse salt
- Pour enough 91%+ isopropyl alcohol to fill about 1/4 of the chamber
The salt acts as an abrasive scrubber while the alcohol dissolves resin.
Step 4: Seal the Openings
You need to seal all openings to shake effectively without spilling:
- Best option: Purpose-made plugs and caps
- DIY option: Plastic wrap secured with rubber bands
- Alternative: Your hands (wear gloves, it gets messy)
Cover the mouthpiece and downstem opening securely.
Step 5: Shake Vigorously
This is where the cleaning happens:
- Hold the piece firmly with both hands
- Shake vigorously in all directions
- Continue for 2-5 minutes
- Focus on moving the solution through all chambers and percolators
For pieces with multiple percolators, angle the piece to ensure solution reaches every chamber.
Step 6: Let It Soak (If Needed)
For light buildup, shaking may be enough. For heavier residue:
- Moderate buildup: Soak 15-30 minutes
- Heavy buildup: Soak 1-2 hours or overnight
- Stubborn spots: Use a brush after soaking to loosen remaining resin
Grunge Off and similar soaking cleaners work without agitation—just let time do the work.
Step 7: Clean Removable Parts
While the main piece soaks, clean the accessories:
Downstems
- Place in a ziplock bag with cleaner and salt
- Shake for 1-2 minutes
- Use a pipe cleaner for the inside
Bowls
- Same bag method works great
- Use a pipe cleaner for the hole
- Q-tips for detail work around edges
Percolators and Ash Catchers
Treat these like mini bongs—fill with solution, seal, shake, and soak if needed.
Step 8: Rinse Thoroughly
This step is critical. Residual cleaning solution affects taste and can be harmful.
- Rinse with hot water for at least 2 minutes
- Shake water through all chambers
- Repeat at least 3 times
- Sniff test—if you smell cleaner, rinse again
Pay extra attention to percolators where solution can hide.
Step 9: Dry Completely
Proper drying prevents water spots and bacteria:
- Shake out excess water
- Air dry upside down on a clean towel
- Allow 30+ minutes before use
- For faster drying, use a paper towel to absorb moisture from accessible areas
Dealing with Stubborn Spots
If Shaking and Soaking Didn't Work:
- Repeat the process: Sometimes twice does the trick
- Use brushes: Flexible brushes reach where shaking can't
- Try a different cleaner: Grunge Off excels at stubborn buildup
- Warm the solution: Slightly warm cleaner works faster (not hot)
For Percolator Buildup:
- Fill the percolator chamber directly
- Let soak for extended time
- Agitate gently to work solution through holes
