A flooded coil is one of the most annoying vape problems. You get a mouthful of juice instead of vapor, gurgling sounds, and sometimes hot spitback. The good news? It's easy to fix once you know how.
What Is a Flooded Coil?
Your coil becomes "flooded" when too much e-liquid saturates the wick and fills the coil chamber. Instead of vaporizing, the excess juice sits in the airflow channel, causing gurgling, spitting, and poor vapor production.
Signs of a Flooded Coil
- Gurgling or bubbling sounds when you puff
- E-liquid spitting into your mouth
- Weak or no vapor production
- Muted flavor
- Liquid in the mouthpiece or airflow
Why Coils Flood
Understanding the causes helps you prevent future flooding:
Overfilling the Tank
Filling past the max line creates pressure that forces juice into the coil chamber.
Letting It Sit Too Long
E-liquid continues wicking into the coil even when you're not vaping. After hours or overnight, the coil can become oversaturated.
Vaping Too Gently
Soft puffs don't vaporize enough juice. The coil floods because you're not using liquid fast enough.
Low Wattage
Not enough power means the coil can't vaporize juice fast enough, leading to buildup.
Wrong E-Liquid
Thin, high-PG juices flow into coils faster than thick VG-based liquids. Using high-PG in a sub-ohm tank often causes flooding.
Temperature Changes
Cold juice is thicker, then thins as it warms up. This can cause sudden flooding when the juice becomes more fluid.
How to Fix a Flooded Coil
Method 1: Blow It Out
- Remove the pod or tank from the battery
- Wrap a paper towel around the bottom
- Blow firmly through the mouthpiece
- Excess juice will come out the bottom
- Wipe clean and reattach
Method 2: Flick It Out
- Remove the pod/tank
- Hold it over a paper towel
- Flick downward several times (like a thermometer)
- Wipe any juice that comes out
Method 3: Burn It Off
- Fire the device in short 1-2 second bursts
- Don't inhale—let it vaporize off
- Repeat until gurgling stops
- This works best for minor flooding
Method 4: Dry Fire (For Rebuildables)
If you have an RDA or RTA:
- Remove the cap/top
- Pulse the fire button to heat the coil
- Watch the excess juice vaporize
- Re-wick if the cotton is completely saturated
Preventing Future Flooding
Fill Correctly
- Never fill past the max line
- Leave an air pocket at the top
- Fill slowly to avoid air bubbles
Adjust Your Vaping Style
- Take longer, more consistent draws
- Don't puff too gently—give it some airflow

Match Power to Coil
- Vape within the coil's recommended wattage range
- Too low = flooding; too high = burning

Use the Right E-Liquid
- Sub-ohm tanks: 70% VG or higher
- Pod systems: 50/50 to 60/40 VG/PG
- MTL devices: 50/50 works best
Store Upright
Always store your vape standing up. Laying it on its side lets juice flood into the coil chamber.
Use Airflow Closure
If your device has adjustable airflow, close it when filling or storing. This reduces pressure changes that cause flooding.
