Part of our Cigar Accessories Guide series
Proper storage is essential for maintaining cigar quality. A well-maintained humidor keeps your cigars fresh for years. Here's how to set one up correctly.
Why Humidors Matter
Cigars need specific conditions to maintain their:
- Moisture: Too dry = burn hot and harsh
- Oils: Preserve flavor compounds
- Construction: Prevent cracking and unraveling
- Aging potential: Allow proper maturation
Ideal Storage Conditions
| Factor | Ideal Range | Acceptable Range |
|---|---|---|
| Humidity | 69-70% | 65-72% |
| Temperature | 68-70°F | 65-72°F |
The "70/70 rule" (70% humidity, 70°F) is a good starting point.
Seasoning a New Humidor
Never put cigars in a new, dry humidor. Season it first:
Method 1: Distilled Water Wipe
- Wipe interior with distilled water using clean cloth
- Don't soak—just dampen
- Place damp sponge inside (on plastic bag)
- Close and wait 24-48 hours
- Remove sponge, let stabilize 24 hours
- Check humidity; repeat if needed
Method 2: Boveda Packs (Easiest)
- Place seasoning Boveda packs (84%) inside
- Close humidor for 14 days
- Replace with regular Boveda (69-72%)
- Add cigars
Humidity Control Options
Boveda Packs (Recommended)
- Two-way humidity control
- Set-and-forget convenience
- Available in multiple RH levels
- Replace every 2-4 months
Traditional Humidifiers
- Foam-based (need frequent attention)
- Gel-based (better longevity)
- Crystal-based (best traditional option)
- Require distilled water or propylene glycol solution
Electronic Humidifiers
- For large humidors/coolidors
- Automatic humidity control
- Higher cost, lower maintenance
Hygrometers
Analog Hygrometers
- Included with most humidors
- Often inaccurate (10-20% off)
- Need calibration
Digital Hygrometers
- Much more accurate
- Recommended upgrade ($10-30)
- Easy to read
Troubleshooting
Humidity Too High
- Open lid for a few hours
- Use lower RH Boveda packs
- Add fewer humidification sources
Humidity Too Low
- Add more Boveda packs
- Check seal (dollar bill test)
- Re-season if needed
Mold Appearing
- Humidity too high
- Remove affected cigars
- Wipe interior with isopropyl alcohol
- Let dry completely, re-season
Maintenance Tips
- Check humidity weekly
- Rotate cigars monthly
- Don't overcrowd
- Keep away from sunlight
- Separate strong-flavored cigars
