Part of our Complete CBD Guide series
CBD oil is the most versatile form of CBD. It allows precise dosing, works relatively quickly, and can be used multiple ways. This guide covers everything you need to know.
What is CBD Oil?
CBD oil combines CBD extract with a carrier oil (typically MCT oil, hemp seed oil, or olive oil). It usually comes in a bottle with a dropper for easy dosing.
CBD Oil vs CBD Tincture
Technically, tinctures use alcohol as a base while oils use carrier oils. However, most products are labeled interchangeably. Today's "tinctures" are almost always oil-based.
How to Use CBD Oil
Sublingual (Under the Tongue)
The most effective method:
- Fill dropper to desired dose
- Place drops under tongue
- Hold for 60-90 seconds
- Swallow remaining oil
Why sublingual works best: Blood vessels under the tongue absorb CBD directly into bloodstream, bypassing digestion.
Other Methods
- Swallowed directly: Works but slower onset, less bioavailable
- Added to food/drinks: Easy but slowest absorption
- Applied topically: Works but topical products are better for this
CBD Oil Concentrations
| Bottle Size | Total CBD | Strength | Approx mg/dropper |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30ml | 300mg | Low | 10mg |
| 30ml | 600mg | Low-Med | 20mg |
| 30ml | 1000mg | Medium | 33mg |
| 30ml | 1500mg | Med-High | 50mg |
| 30ml | 3000mg | High | 100mg |
Based on standard 1ml dropper (approximately 30 droppers per 30ml bottle)
Choosing the Right Strength
For Beginners
Start with 300-600mg bottles. Lower concentration means easier small-dose adjustments while you learn your optimal amount.
For Regular Users
1000-1500mg offers good value and convenient dosing once you know your needs.
For Heavy Users
3000mg+ concentrates provide the best value per mg for those with higher requirements.
